DWECH'S ORIGIN STORY
How Dhauwurd-Wurrung Elderly and Community Health Services came to be.
In the early 90s, Gunditjmara Elders of Portland decided it was time they had a culturally appropriate health service and aged care services in Portland.
A group of Elders lobbied to lots of funding bodies across the state. They were successful in gaining funding to support their vision. This is when Dhauwurd-Wurrung Elderly Citizens was born.
They started out of Aunty Ruth’s kitchen and eventually moved into a few office spaces over time in town. Over the years, they continued to apply for more funding, this is where Dhauwurd-Wurrung employed their first Aged Care workers and manager.
In 2002 we built our first building on Julia Street, the Ngootyoong Mara (Healthy People) Cultural Healing Centre. We operated out of here until 2012 when we outgrew the site.
We then purchased the Wellington Road site which was previously an aged care facility. We have been operating out of here since 2012.
